Our Grand Marshal

Alfonso Sanchez

Alfonso Sanchez is an all-round California merman. A Southern California native who has set roots with his husband, 2 cats, and a guinea pig in Northern California. He has had an affinity for the ocean since he was a guppy; from playing in the water of the sunny, palm-lined, SoCal beaches, to camping in the majestic, redwood forest-lined, NorCal beaches. He has always loved mermaids and all things merlife related. As an adult he has participated in activism and fundraising for the protection of waterways, oceans, and marine life.  When the opportunity to lead the magical organization of the Sacramento Promenade of Mermaids presented itself he dove in head first. Having led it for 4 years and then passing the trident on to new leadership he has seen it grow from a one day event to a 4 day event. It has become a sort of mini-MerCon; the only one of its kind on the West Coast. None of it would have been possible without the support of his great Merteam core of volunteers that have been helping since day one, and many more volunteers have joined the wave along the way, along with financial backing from generous sponsors. Sacramento, Ca is fortunate enough to have an actual mermaid bar, Dive Bar, that has helped since year 3; not only have they been a sponsor but have also hosted the Promenade’s after parties, fundraisers for children and pets, and swim meets with mermaids. Sacramento also has a number of local mermaid pods, pirates, and pixie tribes that have all helped to create and keep mermagic alive. Alfonso also keeps very busy beside helping and promoting mermagic in California; in his default life he works for AAA Insurance, serves on the board for the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, and is President for the West Sacramento Historical Society. He believes that if you don’t like the world you’re living in, then help change it. Get involved in your community, be the voice for those who are to afraid to use it, be the magic.

This Year’s Judges

Beariel the Hairy Mermaid aka Rob Donadio!!!After winning 3rd place Best Costume of NYC at Comic Con in 2012 for his super popular Wonder Wobear costume, Rob found that people had an appreciation for his warped versions of popular, iconic female characters.  Combining his love for Cosplay, creativity and his sense of humor while showing his hairy hirsute body to accent his “Bear” characters, Rob has created several popular and award winning gender bending costumes that get laughs whenever and where ever he wears them.  It is not uncommon to find Rob dressed as Wonder Wobear or  Beariel the Hairy Mermaid, making an appearance at or judging a costume contest at conventions  or marching in parades or performing in clubs as the Parody Bear Extraordinaire, Beardonna. After winning the  “Best Adult Costume” in the Asbury Park Promenade of Mermaids 2016, Rob and Beariel are honored and thrilled to be a Costume Contest Judge at this year’s celebration!

Lily Stitches

Lily has been part of the burlesque and cosplay scene for over 10 years and a mermaid fan her entire life. Her first movie in the theaters was the Little Mermaid, and from then on she had an incredible love for mermaids. Whether it’s putting on Ariel’s ballgown for an event or wearing a sparkly tail onstage, there’s no secret she has a wish to be Under the Sea! Lily is incredibly excited to be a part of this year’s Promenade at the judges table and can’t wait to get her fins on the boardwalk again!

Mondo Marilyn

Mondo Marilyn is a Bon-Vivant, Ranconteur & Gal about Town. It’s not a real party or happening unless Ms. Mondo is in the house! An animal lover & costumer extraordinaire that brings style & passion to everything she does, she’s been a musician, an artist, and also a muse and she is looking forward to seeing what amazing creations are Promenaded on the fabulous Asbury Park Boardwalk this Summer!
