Mermaids are REAL!

Happy Monday, finny friends! Last week we finally revealed the date of the 2nd Annual Promenade of Mermaids as August 27, 2016, and gave you some ideas about different ways to style your mermaid tails. This week I would like to take it a step further and show you some REAL. LIVE. MERMAIDS! (and mermen!)

The art of being a mermaid (mermaid-ing?) is very real, and there are beautiful and talented performers worldwide who dedicate their lives to mastering the intricacies of swimming, performing tricks, style, and yes folks- custom tails. I’d like to introduce you to a few incredible performers I’ve discovered, and hopefully their expertise inspires you on your mermaid costume journey.

Probably the number one search result for live mermaid performances belongs to the Weeki Wachee City of Live Mermaids in Florida.

“Set on 538-acres and home to the deepest naturally-formed spring in North America, this state park is best known for its live Mermaid Shows, where “half-fish, half-human” performers swim and dance in an underwater theater built 20 feet below the spring’s surface.” –Atlas Obscura

Here’s a peek at some highlights from Weeki Wachee:

If you explore instagram, you find dozens of professional mermaids and mermen, mermaid models, and custom mermaid tail crafters. Please allow a few moments for the images to load because well, instagrams embed code isn’t very fast (womp womp).

#MermaidMonday: Warm and Cozy

Welcome to the first day of spring, and our first blog post! Since it’s not feeling so warm out just yet (in fact, it’s snowing in Ocean County as I type!) I wanted to embrace the last bit of winter and show off a few mermaid inspired things that will keep you cozy while contemplating your costumes.

Society6 allows artists to upload their work and print on many different kinds of items. Lucky for us, there are tons of beautiful and unique mermaid blankets (available in 3 different sizes!), like this one.

This beautiful tail will go to three lucky winners- it even has little sparkles on it! Enter her contest here or follow on instagram @seatail_mermaid (don’t worry, even if you don’t win the contest, you can still order one!)

If you need that tail immediately (and I don’t think any of us would blame you!) MotherOfAllDiamonds on eBay makes custom crocheted mermaid “cocoons” for children and adults. I think I could spend an entire weekend cozied up in one of these!

If you would rather make your own mermaid tail blankets, there are tons of tutorials out there! MadeByMarzipan on YouTube shows you how to make a cozy fleece blanket (which I may have to do because come on, look how soft and fluffy it looks!)

For our cozy bitty mer-babies, Whimsy Tails is working on launching the most adorable mermaid tail baby swaddles! Follow them on instagram @alexiasotelo.

Maybe you don’t need a whole blanket to stay cozy in the snow. How about this fantastic nautical scarf from Letswraps on Etsy? I am *so* in love with this print!

Who says mermaids can’t keep their sea-legs warm with a set of chic leg warmers? MademoiselleMermaid sells these babies on etsy with about a million different color and size options.

While I’m at it, these aren’t your typical “Little Mermaid” house slippers, but they look so comfy! Unfortunately they’re sold out from Hot Topic, but I have a feeling you may be able to find a pair on eBay

Another cozy option- this “Sailors Ruin” tattoo style duvet cover from RedBubble would be a perfect addition to any pinup/rockabilly style bedroo- excuse me, boudoir.

Maybe a blanket or scarf just ISN’T ENOUGH!! If you’re totally committed to the mermaid lifestyle, this KESS InHouse woven duvet cover with matching pillowcases might just do the trick. Check out their site for more mermaid duvets- even shower curtains!

However you’re doing it, we hope you’re keeping warm and snuggly! Do you have any cozy mermaid-themed items that you’re using to keep bundled? If so, show us some pictures in the comments! In the meantime, I’m going to go back to etsy and look at that scarf again…
